How AI is Impacting the World
CHIEF: A Faster Way to Predict Tumor Behavior
Harvard Medical School has developed CHIEF, a ChatGPT-like AI model that diagnoses cancers, predicts outcomes, and recommends treatments across 19 cancer types. CHIEF excels beyond typical medical AIs by working across multiple cancer types and tasks, achieving 96% accuracy on biopsies for cancers like esophagus and prostate. It analyzes tumor slides to predict molecular profiles, survival chances, and responses to treatment—offering a faster, cheaper alternative to genomic sequencing.
The AI was tested on over 19,000 tissue slides from 32 global datasets and consistently outperformed other models, regardless of how the tissue samples were collected or digitized. CHIEF even uncovered new patterns in tumors linked to survival, like the presence of immune cells in patients with better outcomes. Researchers plan to expand the model’s capabilities to rare diseases and pre-cancerous tissues and hope it will personalize cancer care worldwide, especially in places where genomic testing isn’t accessible.
CHIEF’s ability to provide fast, precise predictions could bridge healthcare gaps, helping doctors identify which patients might benefit from experimental therapies early on. This kind of AI can speed up diagnoses, streamline treatments, and make personalized care accessible on a global scale.
