How AI is Impacting the World
OpenAI’s text-to-video AI model, Sora, is here
OpenAI has launched Sora, a text-to-video AI model, as part of its ongoing "ship-mas" series. Sora lets users generate videos from text prompts, animate images, remix videos, and create storyboards. Two subscription tiers grant access: ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) offers up to 50 priority videos at 720p resolution, while ChatGPT Pro ($200/month) increases video quality to 1080p, duration to 20 seconds, and allows for unlimited generations and watermark-free downloads. The platform also features an Explore Page, showcasing AI-generated videos by the community and tools like scene blending and output tweaking.
Sora comes with safeguards, including watermarks and metadata, to ensure transparency. Users must agree to content guidelines to upload media, with violations resulting in bans. However, its rollout faces hurdles; the service is available in the US and most countries but will take time to reach Europe and the UK. OpenAI also addressed its approach to moderation and the balance between preventing misuse and enabling creative expression.
The launch follows controversy surrounding a leak by artists from the alpha testing program, who alleged exploitation for unpaid R&D. Despite these challenges, OpenAI aims to position Sora as a powerful tool for creativity while navigating the complexities of responsible AI use. This release sparks questions about how such tools might redefine content creation and regulation in digital spaces.
