🤖 OpenAI introduces agent for deep research
OpenAI’s latest tool aims to match human research analysts.
Hi AI Futurists,
Today, we’re diving into ChatGPT’s new deep research tool, an AI agent that doesn’t just generate answers—it thinks through them step by step. Instead of instant replies, this system takes up to 30 minutes to gather sources, analyze data, and provide detailed, cited responses.
OpenAI claims it can operate at the level of a research analyst, but can AI really handle deep research without human oversight?
Here’s our agenda.

How AI is Impacting the World
OpenAI introduces deep research tool
OpenAI just launched a new feature for ChatGPT Pro subscribers called deep research, an AI agent that autonomously gathers and analyzes information over multiple steps. Unlike a standard chatbot response, this tool outlines its research process in a sidebar, complete with citations and a summary of how it arrived at its conclusions. Users can feed it text, images, PDFs, and spreadsheets for context, and it takes anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to return a detailed response—eventually, it will even generate embedded charts and images. OpenAI warns that, like any AI, it can still hallucinate facts and struggle with credibility assessments, but the goal is to match the capabilities of a human research analyst.
The tool launched for Pro users at $200 per month, with 100 queries per month, while Plus, Team, and Enterprise users will get limited access over time. The reason? Deep research is compute-intensive, and OpenAI is still working on making it faster and more cost-effective. This follows the launch of Operator, another OpenAI agent that can browse the web, and resembles Google's experimental Project Mariner, which isn’t yet publicly available.
OpenAI claims the deep research model has set a new benchmark for AI accuracy, achieving 26.6% on "Humanity’s Last Exam"—a significant leap over GPT-4o’s 3.3%.
Key Points

What We Think About It
The implications are huge: AI that can perform long-form, iterative research could redefine knowledge work, consulting, and even journalism. If deep research delivers on its promise, professionals may soon spend less time hunting for information and more time analyzing and applying it. The challenge will be ensuring AI tools don’t just provide information quickly but also reliably.

This week’s featured thought from a reader:
If AI is properly used for the benefit of humanity, then using AI is a good thing. If AI is used negatively, then humanity as a whole may be in danger.
As AI continues to evolve, its impact depends on how we choose to use it. Will it be a tool for progress, innovation, and problem-solving, or could it pose risks if misused? The conversation around AI ethics and responsibility is more important than ever.
