How AR is Impacting the World

Meta Unveils Orion: What’s Next?

Meta’s annual Connect conference brought some bold moves in AR and AI, headlined by the debut of Orion, the company's first prototype AR glasses. Mark Zuckerberg unveiled these glasses, calling them a “time machine” to a future where the real and virtual worlds merge. The glasses, though still in development, offer impressive features like hand-tracking, voice commands, and a wrist-based neural interface. Meta is working to refine the prototype, making it smaller, more user-friendly, and cost-effective, with a target for consumer release by 2027. This marks a key milestone in Zuckerberg’s vision of an immersive “metaverse,” though the company faces high costs and technical challenges in getting there.

Alongside AR, Meta also revealed significant AI updates. These include enhancements to its chatbot, with new celebrity voices like Judi Dench and John Cena, and improvements to its Ray-Ban smart glasses, which now include real-time language translation and object recognition capabilities. The glasses can respond to voice commands to perform various tasks, like streaming music or scanning QR codes. Meta has also pushed forward with a new entry-level VR headset, the Quest 3S, as part of its strategy to bring more advanced tech to the mass market.

Despite these exciting developments, Meta’s Reality Labs division continues to post significant financial losses—over $8 billion in the first half of 2023 alone. These figures highlight the substantial investment Meta is pouring into AR, AI, and its metaverse vision. While the technology has the potential to revolutionize digital interaction, its long-term success will depend on Meta’s ability to make these products affordable and appealing to consumers.
