🤖 ChatGPT gets a massive upgrade with 'tasks.'
ChatGPT can now run tasks in the background.
Hi AI Futurists,
Today we’re looking at the Tasks" feature for ChatGPT which allows paid users to set reminders and schedule recurring actions. This expands ChatGPT’s functionality beyond real-time conversations into personal assistant territory, competing with Siri and Google Assistant. Though still in beta, it reflects OpenAI’s push for autonomous AI systems but raises questions about reliability and usefulness.
Here’s our agenda.

How AI is Impacting the World
ChatGPT truly just got a massive upgrade. Here’s how what you need to know.
OpenAI is rolling out a beta feature in ChatGPT called Tasks, enabling users to schedule reminders and recurring actions, taking the chatbot closer to being a true digital assistant. Tasks allows users to set daily alerts like weather updates, reminders for things like passport renewals, or even fun tasks like scheduling jokes.
The feature is available exclusively for Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers at $20 or $200 per month and requires selecting “4o with scheduled tasks” in the model picker. Tasks can suggest reminders based on user conversations but only creates them with explicit approval. Users can manage these tasks via chat threads or a dedicated "Tasks" section on the web, with notifications for completed tasks across devices. However, the feature is capped at 10 active tasks simultaneously.
This marks a significant evolution for ChatGPT, which has primarily functioned as a real-time conversational tool until now. OpenAI appears to be expanding its horizons into spaces dominated by Google Assistant and Siri. Alongside Tasks, OpenAI is reportedly developing “Operator,” an autonomous AI agent for controlling computers, and possibly integrating it with other experimental tools like “Caterpillar” for advanced information handling and navigation. These additions signal OpenAI’s ambition to make ChatGPT more agentic, capable of functioning independently in dynamic environments.
However, reliability is a lingering question. Past demos of similar tools have struggled with accuracy, and OpenAI’s beta rollout seems aimed at ironing out these issues before a full-scale launch. This move reflects the economic pressures of maintaining expensive AI infrastructure while redefining productivity tools for human users. This shift may change how we approach planning, productivity, and human-AI collaboration.
Important Points
OpenAI introduces "Tasks," a scheduling tool for ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers.
Users can set reminders or recurring actions via chat or a dedicated "Tasks" section online.
Notifications alert users across devices, but the beta has a 10-task limit.
OpenAI plans to extend functionality, hinting at autonomous AI tools like "Operator" and "Caterpillar."
Questions remain about accuracy, reliability, and whether this justifies ChatGPT’s subscription costs.

What We Think About It
OpenAI's Tasks feature is a smart step toward making ChatGPT more practical for everyday life. While it edges closer to competitors like Siri, its true potential lies in blending conversational fluency with proactive task handling. But reliability challenges could dampen its adoption. The beta will likely reveal whether AI assistants can truly step up in a meaningful way.
What You Can Do With This Right Now
If you’re a paying subscriber, explore the "Tasks" feature and experiment with setting reminders or scheduling recurring actions. For non-subscribers, this development highlights the growing role of paid AI tools in productivity—evaluate if it’s worth the cost for you.
