🗞️ HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY
TL;DR
Apple's new AI models, developed under the DataComp project, have outperformed other leading open-source models such as Mistral and Hugging Face's offerings. The models, available on Hugging Face, include one with 7 billion parameters and another with 1.4 billion parameters, both showing superior benchmark performance.
Summary
New AI Models: Apple released 7B and 1.4B parameter models.
Performance: The 7B model outperformed Mistral-7B and is close to Llama 3 and Google’s Gemma.
Collaboration: The models were developed in collaboration with University of Washington, Tel Aviv University, and Toyota Institute of Research.
Open Source: Models, training code, and datasets are available on Hugging Face.
Context Windows: 7B model has a 2K context window; extended to 8K for further improvements.
License: Models are available under Apple’s Sample Code License and Apache 2.0.
What we think
Apple’s entry into open-source AI with highly competitive models showcases its commitment to advancing AI technology. By making these models and their training data publicly available, Apple not only boosts its own standing in the AI community but also supports further innovation and collaboration. This move is a significant step towards democratizing access to powerful AI tools.
⚡ LATEST IN TECH AND AI
Nvidia is engineering a delicate balancing act, developing a version of its new flagship AI chip, the Blackwell series, specifically for the Chinese market while adhering to U.S. export controls. The new chip, expected to be named "B20," will be distributed in China through Nvidia's partner Inspur. The move comes as the company seeks to reclaim lost market share in a nation where tech titans Huawei and Enflame are breathing down its neck, having seen a decline in revenue share from 26% to 17% over the past two years.
On July 19, 2024, a critical IT issue impacted Windows machines globally, originating from a faulty update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. This update caused numerous devices to enter a recovery boot loop, displaying the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) and disrupting operations across various sectors including finance, aviation, and broadcasting. The issue led to significant delays and cancellations in flights and hindered services such as banking and health clinics. CrowdStrike has since identified and reversed the problematic update, though this fix prevents further crashes rather than repairing already affected systems.
CIA's Director of Artificial Intelligence, Lakshmi Raman, emphasizes a balanced approach to AI, recognizing its potential both as a national security threat and a powerful tool for intelligence work. Raman highlights that AI can streamline data analysis and help detect patterns crucial for the CIA's operations, while also noting the importance of ethical use, human oversight, and preventing bias in AI systems. She underscores the need for collaboration between the government and private sector to advance AI capabilities responsibly and effectively.
💻 DEV RESOURCES
Researchers from Stanford University and Google have developed "Streetscapes," an AI system capable of generating highly realistic street view scenes of entire cities. Using diffusion models and trained on millions of Google Street View images, the AI can create detailed, continuous video sequences of virtual cities from scratch, incorporating elements like windows, cobblestones, and vegetation. Streetscapes allows for creative applications, such as altering the city’s appearance through text descriptions and aims to enhance control over moving objects and image consistency in future iterations.
Endia is an array based programming library for Mojo designed to assist in various scientific and machine learning tasks.
Software developers are often incorrectly held responsible for bugs and outages. The people responsible for these incidents are those who put pressure on software engineers: CEOs, customers, regulators, and other parties in positions of power. Other professionals, such as anesthesiologists or structural engineers, are given the respect they deserve and thus can take responsibility for their work. People ignore software engineers, resulting in broken organizational practices.
