How AI is Impacting the World
MultiFoley’s perfectly synced sound effects
Adobe’s MultiFoley AI, developed with the University of Michigan, reimagines how sound effects are added to videos, blending creativity with cutting-edge AI. By accepting input from text prompts, reference audio, or video, MultiFoley crafts synchronized Foley effects at a stunning 48kHz audio quality. Imagine a cat’s meow becoming a lion’s roar or typewriter keys mimicking piano notes—all perfectly timed to video footage. It’s a significant leap forward, considering most systems lag behind video by over a second, while MultiFoley’s synchronization accuracy averages just 0.8 seconds.
What makes MultiFoley a first-of-its-kind is its multi-input flexibility and robust synchronization technology. It analyzes video visuals at 8 FPS and scales this data to sync with 40 Hz audio samples, ensuring tight integration between sound and movement. User testing highlights its superiority: over 94% of participants preferred MultiFoley’s synchronization, and 85.8% rated it more semantically consistent than competing systems. However, its training dataset is relatively small, which limits the range of sounds it can produce, and it struggles with overlapping audio generation.
While not yet integrated into Adobe’s Premiere Pro, MultiFoley’s release could be transformative for individual creators and production studios, simplifying and elevating sound design.
